August Wrap-Up !!

Hello everyone !!

Hope the weekend’s going well for everyone. I’m going to spend my weekend catching up on the read-alongs. I’m currently reading The Gene by Siddhartha Mukherjee, The Decameron AND Romeo and Juliet.

Also, tomorrow (4th of September) is Onam, an annual Hindu festival with origins in the state of Kerala in India (source: wikipedia). Now, though the festival’s significance and lore is from Hindu mythology, it is celebrated by people of all religions. So, tomorrow is going to be quite a busy day. Also, if you know a malayali, make sure to get yourself invited over for lunch because Onam lunch (called Onasadhya) is absolutely SCRUMPTIOUS. This is the one meal I wait for, EVERY single year.

Anyway, moving on. Thanks to my reading slump, I only read 5 books in August. So this may not be a long post. Here goes –

1. The Child In Time by Ian McEwan 

I picked up this book because there’s a BBC adaptation of it coming up starring Benedict Cumberbatch and being a fan of his, I would obviously watch the series. Like every other bookworm, I prefer reading the book before watching the adaptation.

This was such a painfully beautiful book. I loved it. Of course there were a few parts here and there that were not-so-great, but overall, the book was an interesting and wonderful read. Also, BC would be PERFECT for the role. I just hope the adaptations turns out good. I do plan on writing a review for this before this year ends.

2. Lone Fox Dancing : My Autobiography by Ruskin Bond 

Most Indian readers, even if they’re the kind who read one book in about 2 years, LOVE Ruskin Bond’s works and I’m no exception. In fact, he’s my favourite Bond. The other, much more famous James Bond, comes a close 2nd. So, it’s no surprise that I would pick up his autobiography. He writes with an honesty that’s truly very rare. Despite loving this book, I don’t plan on writing a review for it. However, Vicky from books and strips wrote a review that pretty much says everything I’d want to say about it, so you can read her review here.

3. The Mystery of the Blue Train by Agatha Christie 

Who doesn’t like Agatha Christie’s books ? It’s my aim (without a deadline) to have a complete set of all of her books. As of today, I haven’t even finished all the Hercule Poirot books. I’ll get there some day.

Coming to this specific book, I loved it. I did figure out the killer in the early chapters of the book. Which should ideally mean I didn’t like the book much. I mean, the best mysteries are the ones that keep you guessing till the end, right ? However, I did like it. I’ll hopefully write a review for this one as well.

4. Pigeon Blood Read by Ed Duncan 

The second book, of the ones I read in August, to involve a ruby necklace. This one however, was a suspense thriller. All you urban noir fans, might like this. It was sent to me to review by the publicist, working on that review right now.

 

 

 

5. Environmentally Friendly by Elias Zanbaka 

Those who’ve been reading the name of this book in almost all of my recent posts, I’m sorry, it’s just really good. It’s an action thriller short story and the author sent me a review request and I accepted, despite being a little apprehensive. I’m glad to have accepted the request because this one did not disappoint. You can find my review of it here.
