Review – Strange Medicine

Hello my lovely readers !!!

How’s everyone’s weekend going on ? Mine’s going wonderfully well. My classes begin on Tuesday. For those of you who don’t know, it doesn’t begin on Monday (2nd October), because 2nd of October marks the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and it’s a (yearly) national holiday here, in India.

I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange of an honest review. Thanks to Jay from Strange Books and the author, Mike Russell for the digital copy of the book.

Despite being a short review, I have included a “list of reasons you should read this book”

Author : Mike Russell strangemed

Genre : Short Stories, Anthology, Fiction, Fantasy

Goodreads Rating : 4.02/5

Page Count : 146

Synopsis (Goodreads) : We recommend the following prescription: Strange Medicine – weird and wonderful stories for all that ails you. Strange Medicine is a fantastic collection of extraordinary tales of transformation by UK weird-fiction author Mike Russell. If you love the strange, surreal and unusual or if you are just looking for something different, Strange Medicine is for you.

Remember how in my review of The Vegetarian, I wrote that it’s one of the weirdest books I’ve ever read ? Well, here’s the latest addition to the “weird stories” list and it’s definitely more “strange” than the vegetarian. Also, go ahead and totally judge this book my its cover. That cover sure does justice to the book.

This is my first ever book by Mike Russell and what a wonderful and weird journey it has been. Strange medicine is an excellent anthology of 8 weird or “strange” stories. From a man who’s really a flock of birds to a doctor with no brain, this book has all sort of bizarre short stories. My favourites were Mime, Mr. Dennis and the Universe, and Brain.

Weird stories are still very much out of my comfort zone, but these stories have their own charm. It’s definitely not a genre I can read regularly, even these 8 stories were read in 5 non-consecutive days. I read these when I didn’t have much time to read other books or when I felt like I needed a break from “The Gene” and “The Decameron”.

These 8 short stories are well written and while some make you laugh, others made you think. Some are quite dark, but mostly, they’re just really absurd short stories that make for a fun read. If you’re in a reading slump or you just want a break from the books you usually read, strange medicine would make for a wonderful change.

Here are the reasons you should read this book –

  • It’s well written
  • You could do with a laugh
  • You enjoy weird fiction
  • It’s a fun read
  • You want to read something out of your comfort zone
  • You want a quick, short read.
  • You’re in a reading slump and reading bizarre stories might help you
  • You need a break from the other genres

My Rating – 😄😅😄😅😄

Thanks for reading through my review of Strange Medicine by Mike Russell. You can find the book on Amazon here, and Amazon India here. If any of you have read the book, let me know what you think of the stories, in the comments.

Also, let me know in the comments, what are your plans for the weekend and what’s your current read ?

Hope you all have a great weekend ahead !!

  1. This anthology sounds great! I love weird reads! I definitely want to check this one out! Great review. To answer your question, I was maid of honor in my best friends wedding so that was really amazing! To finish off my weekend I’m taking my little niece to the zoo! Hope your weekend is going well! Oh, and my current read is an arc of Cayley Warding and the Scarlet One!
